The Paleogene period lasted 43 million years, and is the most notable time period for the evolution of relatively small mammals into large diverse groups.

The Paleogene period started 65.5 million years ago and ended 23 million years ago. Lasting through the Paleocene Epoch, Eocene Epoch, and ending in the Oligocene Epoch. The climate at the beggining of  the Paleogene period was warm and moist. The majority of the Earth was tropical or sub-tropical with palm trees spreading all the way up to green land. Towards the end of the Paleogene period the Earths climate began to cool down.
